WINE ADVOCATE 2024
2024 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Chateauneuf Du Pape Premiere Pierre Blanc
Oaky and toasty, the 2024 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc from Domaine Pierre Usseglio reveals aromas of spices, ripe orchard fruits and flowers. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it’s layered and enveloping, with a long, oaky finish.
Domaine Pierre Usseglio cultivates 25 hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, divided among 17 parcels on sand, clay, limestone and galets roulés. Grenache dominates the cépages, supported by Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Old vines, many between 35 and 75 years of age, provide the backbone of the domaine’s plantings, and harvesting is carried out entirely by hand. Low yields and parcel-specific viticulture remain central to the estate’s philosophy.
In the cellar, about 60% of the red fruit is destemmed. Fermentations, conducted with native yeasts under temperature control, last 25 to 35 days. Macerations are long, but extraction remains measured. Élevage occurs in a combination of concrete vats, demi-muids and older foudres, lasting 12 to 18 months, depending on the cuvée. Whites are treated to long pressing, cool fermentations and maturation on the lees to emphasize freshness and texture.
Beyond Châteauneuf, the Usseglio family has also expanded into Lirac, producing a red from Roquemaure since 2011 and, more recently, a white—half Grenache Blanc, half Clairette—both increasingly precise in execution.

JEB DUNNUCK 2023
2023 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Chateauneuf Du Pape Blanc
The 2023 Chateauneuf Du Pape Blanc is beautiful. with a fresh. lively style. Its notes of stone fruits. white flowers, citrus pitch. and crushed stone all define the aromatics. and it’s medium-bodied. with a pure. seamless style. integrated acidity. and a great finish. I’d be thrilled to drink a bottle any time over the coming 4-6 years or so and wouldn’t be surprised to see it evolve longer.

2019 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Chateauneuf Du Pape Premiere Pierre Blanc
The white from the terrific estate always gets overlooked. but it’s well worth seeking out. The lightly colored 2018 Chateauneuf Du Pape Blanc (70% Clairette. 25% Grenache Blanc. and 5% Bourboulenc) was brought up in a mix of barrel and stainless steel. Crushed citrus. white flowers. salty minerality. and hints of white peach all emerge from this crisp. clean. concentrated white that has medium body. bright acidity. and a clean. crisp finish.
Unquestionably one of the top estates in France is that of brothers Thierry and Jean-Pierre Usseglio. whose estate is locatedjust north of the village of Chateauneuf du Pape. on the route to Orange. They pull from roughly 60 hectares of vines and the lineup has grown to include a Vin de France ?Unique, which replaces their Cotes Du Rhone. as well as a terrific Lirac. Looking at their Chateauneuf du Popes, the classic cuvee is always a Grenache heavy blend that include 15-20% each of Syrah and Mourvedre. as well as a small amount of Cinsault. This cuvee is normally mostly destemmed (the 2017 has around 30% stems) and is brought up in a mix of used barrels. The Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Mon Aieul always comes from the La Serres. La Crau. and La Guigasse lieux-dits and is 100% Grenache. It can vary from being completely destemmed or not at all depending on the vintage. and while past vintages sow a touch of new oak it’s raised all in used demi-muids today. They also produce a tiny amount of their Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Deux Freres and it’s always been a more modern styled cuvee in the past. but the amount of new oak has been cut dramatically in recent vintages, with the 2016 only seeing 20% new barrels. This cuvee is always a cellar selection of the top lots in any vintage. and it’s unfortunately not made in either 2017 or 2018. Lastly, and only in great vintages, they’ll pull out a single barrel from the Les Serres lieu-dit that’s from the oldest vines of the estate. This ‘not For You-cuvee has been released in 2007. 2010. and 2016. and it’s Grenache at its most sexy. flamboyant. and over the top.

JEB DUNNUCK 2017
2017 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Chateauneuf Du Pape Premiere Pierre Blanc
Leading off the wines of this great estate, the 2017 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc is primarily Clio rette mixed with small amounts of Grenuche Blanc and Bourboulenc„ brought up 800/0 in tank and 2DE ib in older barrels. This fresh, vibrant white gives up lots of salinity as well as notes of crushed citrus, leafy herbs, arid an undeniable minerality. Medium-bodied. racy, and vibrant. it’s an outstanding white. Drink it over the corning 4-5 years.
When you consider what this estate has accomplished over the past two decades, its easy to include Domaine Pierre Usseglio as not only one of the top addresses in Chtrteauneuf-du-Pape but in all of France 05 well They have been on G sensational roll since igg8 and have yet to put a Foot wrong And that’s apparent with these latest 2015s, which 1 believe are the best wines ever produced here_ In addition to the Chateauneuf-du-Pape releases the estate makes a fabulous Cotes du Rhone and LirCFC, both oF which over-deliver
